Elon Musk’s DOGE is tearing through the US government with disastrous consequences.
But beyond its borders, the extreme right is gearing up to push their own DOGE-inspired austerity campaigns in countries around the world.
In Canada, Shopify executives are heading up a group of tech executives pushing to bring DOGE to Canada, targeting foreign aid programs they don’t like to stir up anger over wasteful government spending.
Canadian tech leaders created a group called Build Canada to advocate for right-wing policies like cutting government workers and reducing refugees, but also created a DOGE-like website called Canada Spends to call out spending their don’t like.
European telecom executives are calling for their own DOGE, to cut telecom regulators and allow them to further consolidate the industry. They have the support of AfD and other right-wing politicians are getting on board too.
Leaders in India and Argentina are praising Musk’s efforts, and Australia isn’t spared. Its right-wing Coalition has a shadow minister of government efficiency, as powerful forces call for an Australian DOGE.
They’re leading in the polls ahead of a May election.
The best example is New Zealand, where the libertarian ACT party is running a new Ministry of Regulation, creating something with a DOGE-like ethos within a parliamentary system. It’s a minor coalition party in a right-wing National-led government.
NZ’s Ministry for Regulation is not only trying to reduce regulation, but has taken over regulatory impact assessments and forced agencies to let them know any time they start working on new policy. It gives them immense insight and influence across government.
The global right-wing embrace of DOGE brings to mind how neoliberalism spread decades ago, and the immense negative consequences that accompanied its social spending cuts, privatizations, and deregulation.
The neoliberal project was further cemented as it was adopted by centrist and even center-left parties. There are already worrying signs of parties adopting renewed austerity agendas in the UK and Canada, that could be influenced by the momentum around DOGE.
